Graduate Student Academic Research Internship

Surfrider Foundation Kauai Chapter is offering a graduate-level Academic Research
Internship focusing on the impact of derelict fishing gear from the North Pacific Hagfish
fisheries on Hawaii’ coastal ecosystems.
Hagfish are eel-shaped, slime-producing marine fish, popular for eating in Korea.
Hagfish traps show up frequently on Hawaii’s shores, and the Surfrider Foundation
Kauai Chapter desires to investigate the origin of these traps and their impact on coastal
resources.
This internship position will entail online research and communication, beach surveys
for marine debris, data collection, data analysis, and community outreach. The intern
will write a final report or thesis manuscript meeting the intern’s academic
requirements for their program. The intern will receive a $1,000/month (minimum)
stipend payment to defray living expenses. This position will be mentored and
supervised under the direction of Surfrider Kauai’s Senior Scientist. An average of 20
hours per week engagement is expected.
Position Requirements:
• Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university graduate program where
completion of the internship results in academic credit or graduate course
completioni
.
• Physically capable of conducting debris cleanups on sandy and rocky coastlines.
• Ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
• Ability to work independently.
• Ability to speak to a group, inform and reach out to industry leaders and other
organizations on the topic.
• Reside on Kauai for 4-6 contiguous months from the start of the internship.
• Must have a valid driver’s license as local public transportation is insufficient.

Duration: flexible, 4 months minimum
Location: Kauai
Stipend: $1000/month ($4,000 total minimum)
