Se finaliza un acuerdo sobre la contaminación para beneficiar a los peces y la vida silvestre en la parte baja del río Duwamish

El 13 de mayo de 2024, el Tribunal de Distrito de los Estados Unidos para el Distrito Oeste de Washington finalizó un acuerdo con Crowley Marine Services, Inc. (Crowley), 8th Avenue Terminals, Inc. y el Departamento de Transporte del Estado de Washington (WSDOT). El acuerdo es en nombre del Consejo Fiduciario de la Bahía de Elliott, que incluye a la NOAA, el Departamento del Interior de los Estados Unidos, el Estado de Washington, la tribu india Muckleshoot y la tribu india Suquamish de la reserva de Port Madison. Este acuerdo compensa los daños a los recursos naturales resultantes de sustancias peligrosas liberadas en el río Lower Duwamish en Washington.
Como parte del acuerdo, las partes compraron créditos en el Proyecto de Restauración Uno que fue completado por Bluefield Holdings Inc. en 2014 en el río Lower Duwamish. Este proyecto creó varios tipos de hábitat que sirven como criadero y zonas de alimentación para muchas especies de peces, incluido el salmón, y como lugar de anidación para aves migratorias. El acuerdo también incluyó un pago en efectivo a los fideicomisarios que utilizarán para financiar futuras restauraciones en el río.
Este acuerdo es parte de una serie de acuerdos tempranos con partes contaminantes por daños a los recursos naturales en el río Lower Duwamish. Entre los acuerdos recientes se encuentran: la empresa Boeing (2010); la ciudad de Seattle (2021); Vigor Industrial y Exxon Mobil Corp. (2021); y las fiestas de Lynden (2023).
La NOAA y los fideicomisarios continúan las negociaciones con otras partes potencialmente responsables que eligieron par
ticipar en la fase de liquidación temprana. Los futuros decretos de consentimiento que finalicen esos asentamientos permitirían una mayor restauración del hábitat en el río.
