Satellite Event is February 1, 2022

Dear Tropical Americas and Caribbean Safe Ocean Colleagues,

First I would like to thank you for your contributions over this past year to advancing towards a Safe Ocean in the Tropical Americas and Caribbean.

Second, I want to make sure that you are aware of a BIG OD Safe Ocean Event and call for proposals.  On April 5-7 will be the Ocean Decade Safe Ocean Laboratory – a 24-48 hour global event.  Between the opening Core Event and closing wrap up session there is an opportunity for stakeholders around the world to organize their own events, called Satellite Activities. Attached are documents explaining the whole process.  While the overall organization of the Lab is the government of Germany, one of the exciting aspects of the Safe Ocean Lab is that it will be “virtually hosted by the Caribbean” giving an opportunity to highlight actions in our region both in the Core and Satellite activities.

The deadline to submit proposals for a Satellite Event is February 1, 2022.  As you can read in the attached documents – the format and focus of the satellite event is an open slate as long as it addresses the Safe Ocean Outcome and related challenges (examples could be storm surge training, forum on integrating local and indigenous knowledge, solutions for multilingual communications, Tsunami Ready, Impact Based Decision support training, Sargassum Hub, MultiHazard brainstorming, Common Alerting Protocol, New monitoring systems, Workshop on effective communication, post surveys, nature based mitigation strategies….) .  I know the Holiday Season is upon us, but for those that might have time now, I wanted to share.  I will resend and update all in early January.  Also, if there is somebody who would like an event on a specific subject, please share with the group and something could be co-designed between now and February 1, 2022.

I wish you all a very Merry and Safe Holiday and hope that 2022 brings us closer to more concrete actions for a safe ocean in the TAC.  Also, please fell free to share this announcement when and how you see fit.

Sincerely,

Christa G. von Hillebrandt-Andrade
