CALL FOR ABSTRACTS – Symposium on Decadal Variability, Bergen, Norway, 26-28 April 2022

Dear all,

The “4th Symposium on Decadal Variability of the North Atlantic and it’s Marine Ecosystem: 2010-2019”
will take place 26-28 April 2022 in Bergen, Norway, hosted by the Institute of Marine Research.
Registration and abstract submission is now open.

This symposium is part of a series of decadal symposia organized by ICES, NAFO and IMR, where
researchers will convene to review the variability of North Atlantic environmental conditions and marine ecosystems over the past decade. The intention is to understand the relationship between ecosystem components and how they influence the distribution, abundance and productivity of living marine resources. While the symposium focuses on reviewing the last decade, contributions related to longer environmental time series, sub-decadal forecast of ecosystem changes and application of environmental data to ocean resource management are also welcome.

This symposium is endorsed as an activity under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for
Sustainable Development.

Theme sessions:

1. Ocean climate and physical environment in the North Atlantic and their linkages to changing
marine ecosystem
2. Decadal changes and trends in North Atlantic/sub-Arctic plankton and their ecosystems
3. Trends and drivers of decadal variability in fish and invertebrates
4. Expanding horizons: assessing decadal changes and incorporating Social-Ecological Systems in
the North Atlantic

Call for abstracts: We invite abstract submissions that describe, explore, and/or interpret observational time-series in all disciplines (physical, chemical, and biological) and areas of the North Atlantic including the Arctic (open ocean, shelf sea, and coastal waters) during the decade 2010-2019. This also includes new analyses and modelling approaches aimed at linking environmental changes to changes in the ecosystem. In addition, contributions that discuss development of marine ecosystems into the coming decade are highly welcomed. Time will also be allocated for early career mentorship.

Special issue in IJMS: We invite abstracts that propose papers to be selected for submission to a special issue of ICES Journal of Marine Science (IJMS). The symposium and subsequent publication will together form an overview of the hydrobiological variability of the North Atlantic during the decade 2010-2019.

ICES Early career scientist funding: The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) will provide support for up to 25 early career scientists from ICES member countries to attend this symposium. You can apply when you register and submit your abstract.
