JOB OPPORTUNITY – ANALYTICAL SCIENTIST

Ocean Diagnostics Inc. (ODI) is a startup company based in downtown Victoria, BC working in the environmental sciences domain with a specific focus on the problem of ocean microplastic pollution. ODI is developing a series of technologies and services for the measurement and monitoring of ocean microplastics that will be employed by the global marine research community, environmental protection agencies, non-profit foundations and several other stakeholders. While ODI is a startup, we have demonstrated a significant growth trajectory with the acquisition of grants from private foundations and the Canadian Government.

ODI is currently seeking an Analytical Scientist. The successful candidate will join our small, dynamic team to help develop both physical and chemical analysis of microplastic particles and fibers sampled from the environment with the assistance of an experienced analytical chemist acting as a consultant. We expect the successful candidate to manage existing analysis projects. Project management skills are a major plus, but not necessary, as these will be developed through interaction with the ODI team. The successful candidate will also assist in a secondary role to help with new product development of sampling devices for microplastics and other analytes associated with the ocean. The position will require considerable collaboration with internal and external resources

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate proprietary protocols that will be used to characterize microplastics collected from environmental samples

  • Perform analysis of microplastic samples using image analysis and spectroscopic based techniques

  • Manage client-based microplastic analysis projects

  • Coordinate client proposals and contracts

  • Manage relationships and projects with academic and industrial subcontractors

  • Manage multidisciplinary projects in collaboration with government agencies and foundations, including citizen science-based programs

  • Design and perform data-driven laboratory and field-based testing of ODI products, prototypes and components

Qualifications, Qualities and Experience

  • Current resident of and ability to work in Canada

  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, especially chemistry or environmental sciences or other highly relevant experience

  • 2+ years of experience in a role involving analytical sciences

  • Experiences as an asset include:

    • Past project management roles

    • Research in marine sciences

  • Required knowledge in standard word processing, spread sheet and database programs

  • Ability to learn quickly and problem solve

  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, comfortable working in a small company environment where both autonomy and working as part of a dynamic team are essential
