Abstract: Epibenthic dinoflagellates of the genus Ostreopsis Schmidt produce toxins which are associated with ciguatera and other harms to the public health in the tropics and subtropics. The present paper reports two new records of this genus for Cuba: Ostreopsis ovata Fukuyo and O. siamensis Schmidt, found in Cienfüegos province, center-south region of Cuban archipelago. Distinctive characteristics for both species were observed. O. ovata cells were distinguished by the ovoidal-claviform shape and small size. O. siamensis cells were identified by the presence of only large pores on their plates and the undulation of the cingulum. O. siamensis was dominant during dry season, whereas O. ovata was the dominant species after rainy season.
